Payments
UPI or Razorpay for event tickets: which should you use?
Every organiser in India hits this question early: should guests pay my UPI ID, or should I set up Razorpay or Cashfree? Both are fine. They suit different events.
Personal UPI: free, instant, you confirm
- No gateway fee — the full amount lands in your bank account.
- No company, website or KYC paperwork needed.
- You (or your team) check that each payment arrived before the guest gets their pass.
- Best for: house parties, workshops, clubs, trips — anything up to a few hundred guests where a short wait for confirmation is fine.
Payment gateway (Razorpay / Cashfree): automatic, with a fee
- Guests pay by card, UPI or netbanking and get their pass immediately — nobody has to approve anything.
- You need your own business account with the gateway, and it must be approved (KYC) before it can take payments.
- The gateway charges its own fee on each payment, and pays out to your bank on its schedule.
- Best for: big nights where hundreds of people book in a rush, or when you can’t check payments yourself.
A simple way to decide
- Expecting under ~200 bookings and happy to check payments a few times a day? Start with UPI.
- Expecting a rush (a launch, a festival night) or can’t watch your phone? Use a gateway.
- Not sure? Start with UPI today and connect a gateway later — you can switch for new bookings any time.
How Yano handles both
On Yano you can choose either for each event. With UPI, guests see your UPI ID, pay from any UPI app and tell you they paid; you check and tap Approve, and their pass is emailed. With your own Razorpay or Cashfree, passes go out the moment the payment succeeds.
Either way the money goes straight to you. Yano never holds, pools or routes ticket money — it charges only a small software credit per paid pass (₹6–₹10).
Try it for your next gathering
Free to start. Guests pay you directly; Yano never holds your ticket money. Free events cost nothing.
Questions people ask
Can I accept UPI without a business account?
Yes. A personal UPI ID is enough to sell tickets on Yano. You confirm each payment before the pass is issued.
What happens if a gateway account is still under review?
Guests can’t pay by card until the gateway approves your account. On Yano, guests are offered your UPI meanwhile, and Yano checks with Razorpay regularly and tells you when card payments are ready.
Who handles refunds?
The organiser who received the money. Yano never holds ticket money, so refunds come from you — by UPI or through your gateway.
