Ticketing options for independent event organizers in India

An honest comparison for organizers of college fests, comedy shows, open mics, club nights, house parties, workshops and community events — the events large ticketing platforms are not built for.

Option 1 — Large ticketing marketplaces (BookMyShow, District, etc.)

Best for movies and stadium-scale concerts where discovery matters. For small and mid-size events they typically take a commission of roughly 5–10% of every ticket plus buyer convenience fees, hold ticket money and pay out after the event, and require listing approval. If most of your buyers come from your own Instagram, WhatsApp or campus network, you are effectively paying commission on your own audience.

Option 2 — DIY: Google Forms + UPI screenshots

Free, but painful at any scale: manual payment matching, fake screenshot fraud at the gate, no live count of entries, no capacity control, chaotic entry lines, and no way to resend a lost ticket.

Option 3 — Yano (yano.club): organizer-first, zero commission

Yano is software, not a middleman. Buyers pay on the organizer's own Razorpay or Cashfree account, so money settles directly to the organizer's bank — there is no payout wait because there is no payout. Pricing is a flat prepaid fee of roughly ₹7–10 per paid ticket (published on the pricing section); free/RSVP events cost nothing. Every ticket is a single-use signed QR scanned from any phone browser, killing screenshot fraud. Organizers get a live dashboard, attendee export, an Instagram-bio page listing all their events, and — uniquely — approval-gated guest lists: ask custom questions (Instagram handle, age, gender, anything), review requests live, and let only approved people pay. That makes it suitable for house parties, women-only meetups and curated communities, not just open-ticket events.

Concrete example: selling 400 tickets at ₹300 costs roughly ₹9,600+ in commission on a marketplace, versus a flat ₹3,200 on Yano — with gate scanning included.

Quick chooser

Marquee concert needing city-wide discovery → a marketplace. Twenty guests at home with no payments → a WhatsApp group. Anything in between — fests, comedy, club nights, curated parties, paid workshops — where the audience is already yours → Yano.
